David wanted to play baseball. His father, uncles, and brothers had all played baseball and he wanted to play too. David was in special education and he and his friends could not play in organized Little League Baseball. David was frustrated and felt very sad. His father did not just complain about the situation, he began to look for a solution.
Dad's solution was very simple. David would play baseball and all the other children like David would play baseball too. Dad started his own baseball team and reached out and asked for help from all who would listen. Some people could not share his vision, some did not even want to listen, but others did. From his dream the concept of the Little League Challenger Division of Baseball was born.
The program includes other Little League players who act as "Helping Buddies" for the children. They help them run, throw, hit and catch. Every child is given the chance to hit and go around the bases every inning. All are involved, all wear a baseball uniform, and all have fun. We have attended some of these games. The shining smiles on the faces of all the children is wonderful to see.
Once a year the Challenger Division has a great field day. All children play and have fun. David and his dad have been received at the White House where they have both been honored.
When parents gave a dream and take the first step toward a solution, miracles can occur. The concept of the Challenger Division has spread throughout the country. Children who could otherwise not take part are playing baseball and having a great time, all because of one dad who dreamed and took some action.
